Over the past 17 years, the always elusive Wonder Worker Guerilla Band (WWGB), led by ringleader Daisuke Yokoyama, have been collaborating amongst themselves and developing some of the best collections amongst their lux streetwear counterparts across Japan.
For S/S ’23, the group dives into fashion history books and lands on traditional western hunting and military garb. Since countries in the West began conquering far-flung lands, soldiering has had a strong link with heat and dust: from Napoleon in Egypt, the building of the British Raj in India, to the US Cavalry in the scrublands of the Southwest and Mexico. These campaigns influenced adaptations in uniform to suit the new environs, resulting in lightweight, practical clothing in beige and khaki made from natural, breathable materials.
Of those materials, you’ll find an airy mix of lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton paired with a color palette of earthy browns, green and blue. This bush shirt-jacket features four flap-button pockets, two slit pockets, and an elastic waist for a custom fit. Most notably, it’s constructed from a mix of TechNa cotton and polyester. TechNa cotton is a newly developed material, a combination of cotton and herbal extract Zinc; the negatively charged ions meet the positively charged Zinc ions, interacting with one another and eventually eliminating the bacteria—ultimately removing body odor and keeping the skin clean. The linen on this safari jacket is artisanally, naturally dyed, and mixed with wool at a rate of 90/10, creating a soft and lightweight material yet still warm enough to wear into fall weather.
